하나님은 아브람이 99세일 때 다시 나타나셔서 그와 아내의 이름을 ‘아브라함'과 '사라'로 바꾸 고 할례를 명령하셨습니다. 그리고 사라를 통해 아들이 태어나고, 그가 언약을 계승할 것이라고 다시 확실하게 말씀하십니다. 아브라함과 사라는 자신들이 너무 늙었다며 믿지 않았으나, 하나님 은 반드시 아들을 주겠다고 약속하십니다. 이 일 후에 죄악이 가득했던 소돔과 고모라는 하나님 의 심판으로 멸망하고, 아브라함은 신변의 안전을 위해 아내 사라를 누이라고 속이는 잘못을 재 차 범합니다. 이번에도 하나님의 직접적인 개입으로 아브라함과 사라는 보호를 받습니다.
