아브람은 조카 롯과 갈라서지만, 전쟁에 휘말린 롯을 구하기 위해 싸움에도 나섭니다. 하나님 은 전장에서 돌아온 아브람에게 그의 자손이 하늘의 별과 같이 많을 것이라는 약속의 말씀을 주십니다. 아브람은 하나님을 믿었고 하나님이 이것을 의로 여기십니다. 하나님은 언약 체결 의식을 통해서 아브라함과의 언약을 반드시 지키겠다고 보증하십니다. 창세기 15장에서 17장까지 13 년이 흐릅니다. 하나님과 언약은 맺었으나 아브람에게는 아들이 아직 없었습니다. 아브람은 당 시 흔히 하던 방법을 따라 여종을 품어 아들을 봅니다. 그가 이스마엘입니다. 그러나 하나님은 이 스마엘을 언약의 자손으로 인정하지 않으셨습니다.
