창세기 5장은 아담부터 노아까지 이어지는 계보를 소개합니다. 그리고 창세기 6-8장은 온 세 상에 사람들의 죄악이 점점 많아지는 것을 보여 줍니다. 하나님이 지으신 만물에 죄가 들어오자 사람들은 급격하게 타락하고, 죄가 온 땅을 뒤덮습니다. 결국 하나님은 세상을 심판하기로 작정 하십니다. 단 한 사람, 노아와 그 가족만은 예외였습니다. 하나님은 노아에게 심판 계획을 말씀하 시고, 노아 가족과 하나님이 선별한 생물들을 태울 거대한 방주를 지으라고 하십니다. 방주가 완 성되자 하나님은 물로 세상을 심판하셨습니다. 홍수는 40일 동안 계속되었고, 비가 그치고 물이 줄어들자 방주는 아라랏 산에 머뭅니다. 노아 가족은 방주에서 나왔고, 제단을 쌓고 하나님께 번 제를 드립니다.
