성경의 관심은 야곱의 열한 번째 아들이자, 야곱이 가장 사랑한 아내 라헬의 첫째 아들인 요셉 에게로 옮겨 갑니다. 요셉은 아버지의 지극한 사랑을 받았고, 어느 날 희한한 꿈 이야기를 합니다. 이런 상황은 형들의 질투를 불러일으킵니다. 야곱의 요청으로, 양 떼를 치던 형들 소식을 알아보 러 갔던 요셉은 형들의미움을 받아 애굽에 노예로 팔려갑니다. 요셉은 범사를 형통하게 하시는 하나님의 은혜로 애굽에서 주인집 가정 총무가 됩니다. 하지만 주인 아내의 유혹을 거절했다가 누명을 쓰고 감옥에 갇힙니다. 감옥에서 요셉은 바로의 두 관원이 꾼 꿈을 해석해 주기도 하지만 요셉의 시련은 끝나지 않습니다.
