A Heart Held By Discouragement

What our hearts continually focus on gradually shapes our thoughts. If we dwell only on disappointment, problems, betrayal, and what we have lost, our hearts grow darker, and we may lose sight of the greatness of God. Discouragement does not arise from circumstances alone. Often it grows when our hearts focus more on the brokenness of the world than on the beauty and goodness of God. We see what is damaged clearly, yet forget his character, his promises, and his presence. Jesus Christ came into this broken world to begin its restoration. He is a hope greater than all our loss and pain. When our hearts turn to him again, we do not deny that our problems are real. We remember that they do not hold ultimate authority over our lives. God himself reigns over all things. So today, pay attention to what is occupying your thoughts. Bring your discouragement before God, and deliberately remember the grace he has shown us in Jesus Christ. When the gospel guides our thinking, discouragement will not so easily rule our hearts. Prayer Father, you are always with me. I praise you because your character and promises stand firm amid the brokenness of this world. Forgive me for so often allowing my heart to dwell only on problems, until I forget your beauty, goodness, and faithfulness. Thank you, Jesus Christ, for being my hope in this broken world. Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts by the gospel and help me out of discouragement, so that I may trust you and see your grace more clearly. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.
